About Directnic

DirectNIC has operated since 2000 under DNC Holdings, Inc., based today in Metairie, Louisiana, just outside New Orleans — and its most well-known moment in the company's history has nothing to do with domain pricing. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, DirectNIC's data centre, on the upper floors of a building at 650 Poydras Street in downtown New Orleans, kept running without interruption on generator power while most of the city lost communications entirely.

An employee live-blogged the experience from the site — nicknamed "Outpost Crystal" — and it became one of the only real-time windows the outside world had into what was happening downtown during the storm, drawing national media attention at the time.

Two decades on, that history is mostly a footnote rather than something that shapes day-to-day service, but it says something about the company's approach to infrastructure resilience that it's still the thing DirectNIC is best remembered for.
