.so is the country-code domain of Somalia. It was added to the root zone on 28 August 1997, but for years it barely worked because Somalia had no functioning central government and no one in the country could run it.
Today it's active again and used by Somali organisations and international brands that like the English word "so".
Somalia's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications officially manages it. IANA handed the domain to the ministry in 2009. The Somali Network Information Centre (soNIC) runs the day-to-day registry, manages the database, works with registrars, and sets the rules. soNIC reopened .so for public registration in November 2010.
People and businesses outside Somalia can register names directly under .so, like brand.so. soNIC also offers second-level endings.
