.io is the country-code domain of the British Indian Ocean Territory, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean also known as the Chagos Archipelago.
It was added to the root zone on 16 September 1997. Hardly anyone lives there, but .io became hugely popular in tech because programmers read "IO" as input/output.
IANA lists Internet Computer Bureau Limited, a UK company, as the manager of .io. Paul Kane founded Internet Computer Bureau and ran the domain for many years.
It was bought by Afilias in 2017, and Afilias later became part of Identity Digital, so .io is now run by an Identity Digital company. Names are sold through accredited registrars.
Anyone can register a .io name like name.io. There's no residency rule. The registry keeps some very short names for special allocation, and a few third-level spaces have their own rules, so check before buying an unusual or premium name.
One question remains about .io's future. In 2025, the UK signed a treaty to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. If that happens and the territory stops existing on paper, the .io code could eventually be retired under normal IANA practice.
As of 2026, the handover is on hold, so nothing has changed for .io owners, but it's worth knowing if you're building a long-term brand on it.
