How much does a .mx domain cost over 3 or 5 years?
Of the 36 registrars compared, Regery is cheapest for both 3 years ($79.49) and 5 years ($139.95).
Is the cheapest first year also the cheapest over time?
Choosing the cheapest first year doesn't cost extra here: Regery's $19.03 start also gives the lowest 3-year total, $79.49.
Transfer terms for .mx
The transfer prices in the table are what registrars list. Whether a transfer of a .mx domain is free or paid, and whether it adds registration time, is not confirmed here and depends on the extension and the registrar.
Bottom line
Regery is the one to beat for .mx: $79.49 over 3 years.
.mx is Mexico's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 1 February 1989, making it one of the first country codes in Latin America. Mexican businesses, institutions and individuals use it both directly and via the familiar .com.mx.
NIC México manages .mx. It began at the Monterrey campus of the Tecnológico de Monterrey, the university that connected Mexico to the internet in the late 1980s. NIC México runs the registry, sets the rules and works with accredited registrars.
Direct .mx names, like brand.mx, are generally open to people and organisations without a Mexican residency rule. They became widely available in 2009, when NIC México opened registration directly under .mx.
.com.mx is also open. The other endings depend on who you are: .org.mx is for non-profits, .edu.mx for schools and universities, .gob.mx for Mexican government bodies and .net.mx for network providers. These need proof that you belong to that group.
Mexican companies, shops, government agencies, universities and media all use .mx. .com.mx is still very common and familiar to Mexican users, while newer brands frequently choose the shorter .mx. Many businesses register both brand.mx and brand.com.mx, so customers reach them whichever one they type.
If someone registers a .mx name that copies your trademark, you can challenge it through a dispute process similar to the one used for generic domains.

How .mx second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .mx: instead of example.mx, a name is registered as example.com.mx, with com marking out one branch of the extension. We track 5 second-level extensions under .mx and 3 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .mx extension is managed by NIC-Mexico. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then mx — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .mx WHOIS server, whois.mx. The .mx registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
