Bottom line
Above.com, at $14.00 for 3 years, is the lowest.
.uk is the United Kingdom's country-code domain and one of the oldest on the internet. It was added to the root zone on 24 July 1985, before most countries had a domain at all. Most UK websites use .co.uk, which is still the country's most popular address.
Nominet UK manages .uk. It's a not-for-profit company based in Oxford, set up in 1996 to take over from the volunteer committee that ran the namespace in the early days.
Nominet runs the registry, sets the rules, accredits registrars and offers a dispute resolution service for .uk names. Others run a few endings: .gov.uk for the UK government, .ac.uk for universities, and .nhs.uk for the health service.
Anyone, from any country, can register under the open endings, and you don't need a UK address. The main choices are .co.uk for businesses and general use, plain .uk (for example, example.uk), .org.uk for organisations and .me.uk for individuals.
.ltd.uk and .plc.uk must match the official name of a registered UK company. .sch.uk and the government, university and NHS endings are restricted.
Plain .uk names launched on 10 June 2014. Nominet held each one back for five years for the owner of the matching .co.uk (or another existing ending), and those reserved rights ended on 25 June 2019.
Nominet is planning a big update to how the .uk registry works, due on 9 February 2027. It mainly affects registrars, covering things like transfers and renewals, and doesn't change who can register.
British businesses, charities, schools, public services and individuals all use .uk. UK shoppers trust .co.uk as a local address.

How .uk second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .uk: instead of example.uk, a name is registered as example.co.uk, with co marking out one branch of the extension. We track 10 second-level extensions under .uk and 8 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .uk extension is managed by Nominet UK. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then uk — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .uk WHOIS server, whois.nic.uk, and over RDAP at https://rdap.nominet.uk/uk. The .uk registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
