.nl is the Netherlands' country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 25 April 1986, making it one of the first country codes outside the United States.
The first .nl name was cwi.nl, for a Dutch research centre. The Dutch are big domain users, and .nl is one of the most popular country codes in the world.
SIDN manages .nl. It's an independent foundation based in Arnhem, set up in 1996. SIDN runs the registry, sets the rules and puts part of its income into internet projects through the SIDN Fund. You buy a .nl name from a registrar.
Anyone can register a .nl name, from anywhere in the world. It's been open to individuals and people abroad since 2003. If you live outside the Netherlands, you agree that SIDN's office address can be used to receive formal documents about your registration.
Since 1 October 2023, SIDN hasn't allowed privacy or proxy services. The real person or organisation that controls a .nl name must be listed as the holder, not an intermediary.
This doesn't mean your details become public. SIDN has hidden private individuals' details from its public WHOIS since 2010. It just means the registry knows who the real holder is.
Dutch businesses, government services, schools, clubs and a huge number of personal sites use .nl. Dutch shoppers strongly prefer it for local websites, so international retailers use it for their Dutch shops. Because registration is open, a .nl name doesn't by itself prove a business is Dutch.
