.sh is the country code for Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic; outside the islands the attraction is the two letters, since sh is also the file extension for Unix shell scripts.
Although IANA lists the Government of St Helena as the official manager, the commercial aspect has been in private hands since 1997. In 1997 IANA assigned .sh together with .io and .ac to the British businessman Paul Kane, and he managed all three of them under the name Internet Computer Bureau. He sold the company to the registry firm Afilias in April 2017 for $70.17 million (Domain Incite).
In June 2017, Afilias transferred .sh to its own registry system; Donuts subsequently acquired Afilias and the two companies merged to form Identity Digital in 2022. The Internet Computer Bureau is now part of Identity Digital and IANA still has it listed as the technical contact for .sh.
The islands still obtain direct benefits. According to the St Helena government, the .sh domain is administered through a management company and the Nic.sh website, and residents, companies and organisations on the island can register names with co.sh, com.sh, net.sh, nom.sh and org.sh at no cost (St Helena Government). Individuals are required to have a British passport issued to St Helena citizens and companies must provide their St Helena company registration. The gov.sh address is reserved for government organisations and edu.sh for schools as well, and both of these are offered free of charge. When it announced the free domains in 2020, the government stated that the total number of .sh domains was over 11,000. All other registrations are made at the second level, for example yourname.sh, and this is available worldwide, subject to the registry rules which prohibit spam and other inappropriate uses.
