Bottom line

.nz is the country-code domain of Aotearoa New Zealand. It was added to the root zone on 19 January 1987. For a long time you could only register under endings like .co.nz and .org.nz. Since 30 September 2014, you can also register directly under .nz, such as example.nz.
InternetNZ manages .nz. It's a non-profit, member-based organisation in Wellington. InternetNZ runs the shared registry system that registrars connect to. A separate group, the Domain Name Commission, which is a subsidiary of InternetNZ, regulates .nz.
It authorises registrars, enforces the rules and handles disputes. Keeping those two jobs separate is a key feature of the .nz system.
Any identifiable person aged 18 or over, or any properly set-up organisation, can register a .nz name from anywhere in the world. There's no need to live in New Zealand. You must give accurate details, and you may be asked to confirm your identity.
You can register directly under .nz or under one of the established endings, like .co.nz, .org.nz, .net.nz, .ac.nz or .school.nz. A few endings need extra approval: .govt.nz, .mil.nz, .health.nz, .iwi.nz, .cri.nz and .parliament.nz. The rules say no new endings will be added.
.nz also supports macrons, the marks used over vowels in te reo Māori, so Māori words can be spelt correctly in a domain name.
New Zealand businesses, government agencies, iwi organisations, schools, community groups and individuals all use .nz. Many businesses keep their .co.nz address and also hold the shorter .nz.

How .nz second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .nz: instead of example.nz, a name is registered as example.co.nz, with co marking out one branch of the extension. We track 16 second-level extensions under .nz and 10 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .nz extension is managed by InternetNZ. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then nz — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .nz WHOIS server, whois.irs.net.nz. The .nz registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
