Transfer terms for .es
The transfer prices in the table are what registrars list. Whether a transfer of a .es domain is free or paid, and whether it adds registration time, is not confirmed here and depends on the extension and the registrar. See the Facts tab.
Bottom line
Keeping .es for 3 years is cheapest at INWX ($18.35).
.es is Spain's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 14 April 1988, and the letters come from España. It's the natural choice for any website aimed mainly at Spain.
Red.es manages .es. It's a public body under the Spanish ministry responsible for digital transformation, and it runs the registry through its service dominios.es. For many years, .es was tightly controlled. The rules relaxed in 2005, opening it up to far more people and businesses.
Applicants can be based anywhere in the world. The rules say you should have an interest in, or link with, Spain, but in practice the check for direct .es names is light, and many foreign companies hold them for their Spanish websites.
You need to provide accurate identity details, and Red.es can ask you to confirm them.
Spain also has second-level endings, each having its own purpose. .com.es is for individuals and businesses, much like a direct .es name. .nom.es is for individuals and .org.es is for non-profit organisations.
.gob.es is only for Spanish public bodies, and .edu.es is for education and research institutions in Spain. Those last two are checked carefully, so having a .es name doesn't mean you can register under them.
Spanish businesses, government services, schools, media and personal sites all use .es. International brands use it for their Spanish shops, often alongside a global .com.

Transfer prices are shown in the price table. What a transfer does to the registration time can depend on the registrar and the offer, so check it at the registrar before you transfer.
How .es second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .es: instead of example.es, a name is registered as example.org.es, with org marking out one branch of the extension. We track 5 second-level extensions under .es and 4 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .es extension is managed by Red.es. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then es — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .es WHOIS server, whois.nic.es. The .es registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
