.fr is the country-code domain for France. It was added to the root zone on 2 September 1986. It covers mainland France and Corsica, and most French businesses, public services, and individuals use it online.
Afnic manages .fr. It's a non-profit association established in 1997 by France's national research institute, Inria, and the French state. Afnic writes the naming rules, runs the registry and accredits the registrars who sell names. It also manages several French overseas domains, such as .re for Réunion.
.fr isn't open to the whole world. You can register one if you live in a European Union country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland, or if you're a company or organisation with its registered office or main business in one of those countries.
A US or Asian company with no European base can't register .fr directly, even if it sells to French customers. Since Brexit, the United Kingdom is no longer on the list, so UK-based holders had to find another way to qualify.
