.pt is Portugal's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 30 June 1988. It's the address for Portuguese businesses, public institutions and individuals, and more and more international companies use it for their Portuguese websites.
Associação DNS.PT, known simply as .PT, manages the domain. It's a private, non-profit association based in Lisbon, created by Portugal's national science and technology foundation together with business and consumer groups. It officially took over .pt in 2013 from FCCN, the national research network that had run the domain since the start.
.pt domain names are available to individuals and organisations regardless of residency in Portugal. Previously, registration required proof of rights, such as a matching trademark or company name, but these rules have been relaxed.
As a result, .pt is now among the more accessible European country codes. Additional extensions, including .com.pt, .org.pt, and .edu.pt, are also available, though some reserved names have specific conditions.
A new version of the .pt registration rules came into force on 1 July 2026, along with new privacy and WHOIS policies. Older names may still be covered by the rules that applied when they were registered, and .PT keeps the older versions online.
Portuguese businesses, government services, universities, tourism businesses and individuals all use .pt. Many Portuguese companies run both a .pt and a .com.

How .pt second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .pt: instead of example.pt, a name is registered as example.com.pt, with com marking out one branch of the extension. We track 8 second-level extensions under .pt and 2 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .pt extension is managed by Associação DNS.PT. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then pt — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .pt WHOIS server, whois.dns.pt. The .pt registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
