Bottom line
Over 3 years, Truehost.com is the cheapest way to own .ng, at $28.99.
.ng is Nigeria's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 15 March 1995. In its early years, it was run from outside Nigeria before management moved back home. Today it's the national address for Nigerian businesses, creators, media and organisations.
The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) manages .ng. NiRA is a non-profit association of Nigerian internet groups and companies, established in 2005. The domain was transferred to a Nigerian government agency in 2004 and subsequently to NiRA in 2009.
NiRA manages the registry and accredits registrars, but does not sell domain names directly to the public.
NiRA splits .ng into open and closed spaces. The open spaces have no restrictions on who can register: direct .ng names, plus .com.ng, .org.ng, .net.ng, .mobi.ng, .name.ng and .i.ng.
The closed spaces are for qualifying Nigerian institutions, such as .gov.ng for government, .edu.ng for universities, .sch.ng for schools, and .mil.ng for the military. These need supporting documents.
Nigerian companies, fintech start-ups, media houses, creators, churches, charities and government agencies all use .ng. .com.ng has been around for a long time and is familiar to Nigerian users, while newer brands often go for the shorter .ng. Nigerians living abroad also use it to stay connected to home.
A .ng name in an open space doesn't mean the holder is Nigerian or registered in Nigeria, and it doesn't replace any licence needed for regulated work like banking or payments. If you're building a Nigerian business, register the domain in the name of the company that will actually control it.

How .ng second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .ng: instead of example.ng, a name is registered as example.com.ng, with com marking out one branch of the extension. We track 10 second-level extensions under .ng and 9 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .ng extension is managed by Nigeria Internet Registration Association. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then ng — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .ng WHOIS server, whois.nic.net.ng, and over RDAP at https://rdap.nic.net.ng. The .ng registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
