Bottom line
Regery, at $262.08 for 3 years, is the lowest.
.ly is the country-code domain of Libya. It was added to the root zone on 23 April 1997. Outside Libya, it's known for wordplay, because so many English words end in "-ly", and link shorteners like bit.ly made it famous. Formally, though, it's Libya's national domain, and Libyan law applies.
Since October 2025, Libya's General Authority of Communications and Informatics, based in Tripoli, has officially managed it. Before that, official records still listed a state telecom company that closed in 2010. Libya Telecom and Technology (LTT) remains the technical provider and runs the registry system, known as NIC.LY.
People and companies outside Libya can register most names directly under .ly. The main exception is short names. Names under four characters need a local presence in Libya.
Some endings, such as .gov.ly and .edu.ly, are only for Libyan institutions. With the new manager in place, the rules may change, so check the current terms before you register.
The registry can also refuse or remove names and websites that break Libyan law or its own rules. In 2010, a .ly link-shortening site was taken down because its content was judged to break local rules.
So the rules for .ly can be stricter than people expect from a generic extension like .com.
Short links, apps and brand names built on "-ly" wordplay make up most of .ly's use abroad, alongside Libyan businesses and institutions. If you choose a wordplay name, say it out loud first, because people may not realise the ending is part of the word.
How .ly second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .ly: instead of example.ly, a name is registered as example.com.ly, with com marking out one branch of the extension. We track 9 second-level extensions under .ly and 5 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .ly extension is managed by General Authority of Communications and Informatics (GACI). Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then ly — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .ly WHOIS server, whois.nic.ly, and over RDAP at https://rdap.nic.ly. The .ly registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
