.ke is Kenya's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 29 April 1993. For most of its history, Kenyans registered names under endings like .co.ke. Since July 2017 you can also register directly under .ke, like brand.ke.
The Kenya Network Information Centre (KeNIC) manages .ke. It's a non-profit organisation established as a partnership between Kenya's government, private companies, and the internet community, and it officially took over the domain in 2002. KeNIC runs the registry and accredits the registrars who sell names.
Direct .ke names are open to the public, subject to the registry's rules and reserved names. Each ending serves a different purpose. .co.ke is for companies and is the most popular Kenyan ending.
.or.ke is for non-profits, .ne.ke for network providers, and .me.ke, .mobi.ke and .info.ke are for personal and general use. .go.ke for government, .ac.ke for universities and .sc.ke for schools need supporting documents.
When second-level .ke names launched in July 2017, trademark owners got the first chance to claim their names before they opened to everyone.
Kenyan businesses, government agencies, universities, charities, media and individuals all use .ke. Many established companies still use .co.ke, which Kenyans know well, while newer businesses and start-ups often choose the shorter .ke. International companies use .ke for their Kenyan websites.

How .ke second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .ke: instead of example.ke, a name is registered as example.co.ke, with co marking out one branch of the extension. We track 9 second-level extensions under .ke and 9 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .ke extension is managed by Kenya Network Information Center (KeNIC). Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then ke — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .ke WHOIS server, whois.kenic.or.ke, and over RDAP at https://rdap.kenic.or.ke. The .ke registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
