Bottom line
Regery has the lowest 3-year cost for .jp: $96.29, which is $13.68 less than Hostinger, the registrar with the lowest first year.
.jp is Japan's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 5 August 1986. It's one of the most organised country codes in the world, with different name types for different holders and one firm rule: you need a Japanese address.
Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. (JPRS) manages .jp. The Japan Network Information Center (JPNIC) established JPRS in 2000, and it officially took over .jp in 2002. JPRS is a private company, but it runs .jp as a public resource. It operates the registry and works with accredited registrars.
To register a general .jp name, such as example.jp, you need a Japanese address. That can be a person, a company or a group, but a foreign company with no Japanese address can't qualify, even if it sells to Japanese customers.
There are three main types of .jp name. General .jp names can be held in any number and can be written in Japanese characters as well as Latin letters. Organisation names depend on the type of holder: .co.jp for companies registered in Japan, .ac.jp for universities, .or.jp for certain organisations, .ne.jp for network services and .go.jp for government.
Each organisation can usually hold only one of these. Place-based names also exist, such as tokyo.jp.
Japanese businesses, government agencies, universities, media and individuals all use .jp. A .co.jp address carries real weight in Japan, because only registered Japanese companies can get one, and only one each. International companies with Japanese subsidiaries often use .co.jp for that reason.

How .jp second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .jp: instead of example.jp, a name is registered as example.co.jp, with co marking out one branch of the extension. We track 103 second-level extensions under .jp and 9 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .jp extension is managed by Japan Registry Services Co., Ltd. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then jp — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .jp WHOIS server, whois.jprs.jp. The .jp registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
