.it is Italy's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 23 December 1987, and the very first .it name was cnr.it, for Italy's National Research Council. Today it's the default address for Italian companies, public bodies and families.
Registro .it manages the domain. It's part of the Institute of Informatics and Telematics of the National Research Council (CNR) in Pisa, so it's a public institution rather than a private company. Registro .it runs the registry and publishes the rules, and accredited registrars sell names.
To register a .it name, you must be an adult with citizenship, residence or a registered office in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, San Marino or Vatican City. You don't have to live in Italy itself, so a French company or a Spanish resident can hold one.
But a company based only in the United States or Asia can't register .it directly, even if it sells in Italy. It would need an eligible European company to hold the name.
Some names are reserved. Names that match Italian regions and towns are kept for those local authorities, and .gov.it is only for Italian public administrations.
Italian businesses, from family shops to famous fashion and food brands, use .it, along with government services, universities, newspapers and personal sites. Italian shoppers recognise it straight away. Because "it" is also an English word, some people use it for wordplay, but the eligibility rules still apply.
