.ie is Ireland's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 27 January 1988. It's known as one of the stricter country codes because you have to show a real connection to the island of Ireland to get one.
The domain is run by the IE Domain Registry, which trades as .IE and is based in Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. It grew out of University College Dublin, which looked after .ie in its early years.
In June 2026, IANA formally made IE Domain Registry CLG the official manager of the .ie domain. Names are sold through accredited registrars.
To register, you must show a connection to the island of Ireland, including Northern Ireland, and confirm your identity. Irish and Northern Irish companies, registered business names, charities, schools and public bodies can usually qualify through official records.
People who live on the island or are Irish citizens can register as individuals. A business abroad can qualify if it sells, or plans to sell, to customers on the island and can show evidence. Individuals who aren't Irish citizens and don't live on the island can't register.
Until March 2018, applicants were required to demonstrate a right to the exact name requested, such as a matching business name or trademark. This requirement was removed on 21 March 2018. While an Irish connection is still necessary, any available name may now be chosen.
Irish businesses, government departments, universities, sports clubs, charities and individuals all use .ie. Because of the checks, many Irish shoppers see a .ie address as a sign of a genuine local business.
