Bottom line
Keeping .hu for 3 years is cheapest at Regtons ($18.13).
.hu is Hungary's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 7 November 1990. Hungarian businesses, public bodies and individuals use it as their national address.
The Council of Hungarian Internet Providers (Internet Szolgáltatók Tanácsa, ISZT) manages the .hu domain. It's a non-profit organisation that brings together Hungary's internet providers. ISZT runs the registry, publishes the rules on domain.hu and works with accredited registrars.
As of 1 July 2026, applicants from any country may apply, following one of two routes. Individuals and companies from the EU, Council of Europe, EEA, EFTA, or countries bordering Hungary may apply immediately. Hungarian residence permit holders are also eligible.
Other applicants must have, or be starting, a business or activity that justifies a .hu domain and may be required to provide evidence. Individual applicants must be at least 18 years old. Domain names matching Hungarian towns or villages are reserved for the local council.
As well as direct .hu names, Hungary has endings such as .co.hu for companies, .org.hu for organisations, .info.hu and .tm.hu for trademarks. Many older Hungarian businesses still use .co.hu, while newer ones usually choose the shorter .hu.
Hungarian companies, government services, schools, media and personal sites all use .hu. Businesses from outside the listed countries can still register, but they should keep records of their Hungarian activity in case they're asked.
How .hu second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .hu: instead of example.hu, a name is registered as example.co.hu, with co marking out one branch of the extension. We track 31 second-level extensions under .hu and 31 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .hu extension is managed by Council of Hungarian Internet Providers (CHIP). Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then hu — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .hu WHOIS server, whois.nic.hu. The .hu registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
