Bottom line
Regery is the one to beat for .gr: $36.93 over 3 years.
.gr is Greece's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 19 February 1989. Greece also has a domain written in the Greek alphabet, .ελ, so Greek organisations can use fully Greek addresses.
Two bodies share the work of running .gr. The Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT), Greece's telecoms regulator, writes the rules. The technical registry is run by the Institute of Computer Science at the Foundation for Research and Technology–Hellas (ICS-FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete.
You don't deal with either of them directly; you register through an accredited registrar.
Direct .gr names are widely available. You generally don't need a Greek address or citizenship, so businesses and people abroad can register. Some names are reserved, and all registrations follow EETT's rules and dispute procedures.
Greece also has second-level endings such as .com.gr, .org.gr, .edu.gr and .gov.gr, and the education and government ones are only for Greek institutions.
.ελ suits organisations that want a fully Greek address, such as government bodies and Greek-language media. Most Greek businesses still use .gr because it's easier to type on any keyboard and better known abroad, and some hold both.
You can also use Greek letters in the name before the dot in a .gr domain.
Greek businesses, government services, universities, tourism businesses and individuals all use .gr. Tourism businesses often use it to show they're local while also running an English version of their site.

How .gr second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .gr: instead of example.gr, a name is registered as example.com.gr, with com marking out one branch of the extension. We track 5 second-level extensions under .gr and 4 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .gr extension is managed by ICS-FORTH GR. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then gr — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. The .gr registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
