.fi is Finland's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 17 December 1986. Finnish companies, public services, associations and individuals use it as their main web address.
Unlike most country codes, .fi is run by a government agency. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom, manages the domain under Finnish law. Traficom was formed in 2019, and before that its predecessor, the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, ran .fi. Traficom keeps the register, while registrars handle applications and customer service.
Anyone can register a .fi name, from anywhere. That wasn't always the case. .fi used to require a Finnish connection, but on 5 September 2016 a new law opened it to foreign people and companies and moved all registrations to registrars.
You must give correct details and use the name lawfully. Traficom can act against names that break the law, such as names that clearly copy someone's trademark or company name.
.fi supports the letters å, ä and ö, so Finnish and Swedish words can be spelt properly. Finland has both languages as official languages, so this matters to many organisations. If you register a name with these letters, it's a good idea to register the plain version as well.
Finnish businesses, government agencies, schools, media and personal sites all use .fi, and international companies use it for their Finnish websites without needing a local office. Because the rules come from Finnish law, they're stable but can take time to change.
