.cl is Chile's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 15 December 1987, making it one of South America's first country codes. Most Chilean businesses, government sites and media use it.
NIC Chile manages .cl. It's part of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chile in Santiago, which has looked after the domain since the beginning.
NIC Chile runs the registry, sets the rules and works with accredited registrars. Disputes over .cl names go through a Chilean arbitration process rather than the international system used for many generic domains.
Anyone, Chilean or foreign, can register a .cl name. Since 1 December 2013, people and companies outside Chile can register directly without appointing a representative in Chile.
You must provide accurate details and name an administrative contact to handle the registry for you, including disputes. NIC Chile may request proof of identity, and some names are reserved.
.cl only works at the second level. There are no endings like .com.cl or .org.cl, so every name is short and direct, like empresa.cl.
Chilean companies, public institutions, universities, newspapers and individuals all use .cl, and international brands use it for their Chilean shops. Open registration doesn't override other people's rights, though. If your name matches someone else's trademark or company name, they can challenge it through NIC Chile's dispute process.
