.br is Brazil's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 18 April 1989 and is by far the biggest country code in Latin America. Most Brazilian websites use .com.br.
The Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) is the official manager. It brings together government, business, universities, and civil society to set Brazil's internet policy. Registrations are handled by Registro.br, part of NIC.br, a non-profit that carries out CGI.br's decisions and puts domain income back into Brazil's internet infrastructure.
.br has a real local requirement. A Brazilian person must be an adult with a CPF, the national tax number. A Brazilian organisation must have a CNPJ, the national company number.
A foreign company can register through a legal representative in Brazil, who acts for it in Brazilian matters. Having Brazilian customers isn't enough.
Instead of one open space, .br is split into many categories. .com.br is the main one for businesses. Others include .net.br, .org.br for non-profits, .gov.br for government and .edu.br for universities, as well as professional ones like .adv.br for lawyers, .med.br for doctors and .eng.br for engineers.
Some require proof that you belong to that profession or type of organisation.
Almost every Brazilian business uses .com.br, and Brazilians see it as a sign of a local, trusted website. International brands that open in Brazil usually register .com.br through their Brazilian company.
How .br second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .br: instead of example.br, a name is registered as example.abc.br, with abc marking out one branch of the extension. We track 146 second-level extensions under .br and 100 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .br extension is managed by Comite Gestor da Internet no Brasil. Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then br — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .br WHOIS server, whois.registro.br, and over RDAP at https://rdap.registro.br. The .br registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
