Bottom line
Above.com gives the lowest 3-year cost for .au: $22.80.
.au is Australia's country-code domain. It was added to the root zone on 5 March 1986, which makes it one of the oldest country codes on the internet.
For most of its life, people knew it through endings like .com.au and .org.au. Since 24 March 2022, you can also register directly under .au, such as example.au.
The .au Domain Administration, known as auDA, manages the domain. auDA is a not-for-profit company endorsed by the Australian Government, and it took over from the founding volunteer administration in 2001. It writes the rules, licenses the registrars who sell names and oversees the company that runs the technical registry.
In order to have a .au domain name you must have an Australian connection; this can be achieved by being an Australian citizen or a permanent resident, by having a business in Australia with an ABN or ACN, or by owning an Australian trademark.
There are also provisions for charities, clubs and associations. Simply selling to Australians from abroad is not sufficient.
Longer endings have extra rules. .com.au and .net.au are for commercial entities, and the name must match or closely relate to your business name, trademark, or what you sell.
.org.au and .asn.au are for non-profit groups. A direct .au name has no name-matching test, so it's the most flexible option for anyone who meets the Australian presence rule.
Australian businesses, government agencies, schools, charities and individuals all use .au. Many companies keep their familiar .com.au address and hold the matching .au as well. Because eligibility is checked, a .au address tells visitors the holder has a real link to Australia.

How .au second-level domains work
A second-level domain sits one step below .au: instead of example.au, a name is registered as example.asn.au, with asn marking out one branch of the extension. We track 17 second-level extensions under .au and 5 of them have registrar prices so far.
The .au extension is managed by .au Domain Administration (auDA). Who can register under each second level, and on what terms, is decided at the registry rather than by the registrar, and a few zones may be administered separately, so confirm eligibility with your registrar before buying.
A name under any of them has three labels — your name, the second level, then au — and DNS works exactly as for any other domain. Registration data is published through the .au WHOIS server, whois.auda.org.au, and over RDAP at https://rdap.cctld.au/rdap. The .au registry supports DNSSEC, so zones under its second levels can be signed and validated end to end.
